Anyone know of a source for these clips that hold the dial in place on the old trailer hitches? I have several broken ones. Seems far fetched but better to ask, right?

        David,

What I have done in that case is to replace the coupler with the newer style. I think the last one I got from Tractor Supply for around $20.

For what it is worth, the only time I have ever had a trailer unhook was with what you are trying to save.

If you are trying to save it for originality, I understand but I think you will end up making or repairing something. If you are planning to use the trailer, replace the coupler with a new one. That style coupler is about as bad as it gets for safety. There is a reason they don’t produce those new anymore. I still have one on a trailer I have, but I don’t tow it down the road. Like David said, $20 at Tractor Supply and you’re set.

U-Haul still had that knob-styled latch on their trailers the last time I rented one. As they sell hitch and wiring parts anyway, they may be able to supply what you need. I would still look into the legality of that style coupler before making any cash outlay.

You want a way to lock the knob in place, some of the old style ones will vibrate loose.

That spring-loaded tab is supposed to lock the knob in place. They too tend to fail, hence David’s original request for help finding replacements. They just are not that reliable of a setup. Some are better than others, but the flip style latch with a pin or bolt through it to prevent opening is far superior. I’m not sure they are still legal to use either. I personally don’t recommend it regardless of legality. Losing a trailer is NOT something one wants to do. Crossed safety chains saved one for me and believe me, realizing the trailer has come uncoupled from the tow vehicle is a very disheartening feeling! 😯

No, actually U-Haul is still renting trailors with those and even leter built trailors. I just put 2,500 miles on one last May with no problems.

My ’52 Wagemaker is currently on an Elgin trailer with that hitch. But it’s going on the TeeNee this weekend.
