David,
What I have done in that case is to replace the coupler with the newer style. I think the last one I got from Tractor Supply for around $20.
For what it is worth, the only time I have ever had a trailer unhook was with what you are trying to save.

August 20, 2016 at 10:56 am #42386If you are trying to save it for originality, I understand but I think you will end up making or repairing something. If you are planning to use the trailer, replace the coupler with a new one. That style coupler is about as bad as it gets for safety. There is a reason they don’t produce those new anymore. I still have one on a trailer I have, but I don’t tow it down the road. Like David said, $20 at Tractor Supply and you’re set.

August 20, 2016 at 12:02 pm #42388U-Haul still had that knob-styled latch on their trailers the last time I rented one. As they sell hitch and wiring parts anyway, they may be able to supply what you need. I would still look into the legality of that style coupler before making any cash outlay.
August 20, 2016 at 12:59 pm #42392You want a way to lock the knob in place, some of the old style ones will vibrate loose.
August 20, 2016 at 1:39 pm #42393That spring-loaded tab is supposed to lock the knob in place. They too tend to fail, hence David’s original request for help finding replacements. They just are not that reliable of a setup. Some are better than others, but the flip style latch with a pin or bolt through it to prevent opening is far superior. I’m not sure they are still legal to use either. I personally don’t recommend it regardless of legality. Losing a trailer is NOT something one wants to do. Crossed safety chains saved one for me and believe me, realizing the trailer has come uncoupled from the tow vehicle is a very disheartening feeling! 😯
