So yesterday my Big Twin was struggling to get into gear and now it’s not going into forward gear at all. It will go into reverse sometimes. I opened the "window" on the leg of the motor and it looks to me like the shift rod is not moving at all when shifted into forward. It moves to bit when put in reverse. Any ideas?

Where? Do you mean all the way under the head like the head needs to be removed?

Yep. OR there is extreme wear in where the shift handle shaft goes through the housing. OR the shifter handle is loose on the shaft. OR a combination of more than one of those common faults.

—OR (you didn’t say what year it is) it could be a broken clevis (another common fault and also under the powerhead. Whatever the cause, it’s time for the powerhead to come off.

—OR, if it is a Super Quiet model, could be wear in the universal joint linkage between the shifter handle and shifter shaft. I guess that’s enough possibilities for now.

What model is it? That would help.

The number on the motor is 25532 50852 it is a motor made in Peterborough, Canada. It may be a Lark and not a Big Twin. It looks like a late 50s motor. I have another similar model, for parts.

                        Frank,
Why is the Lark a better model? What was different items installed, please? I know where a Lark is now. Is it a Johnson built motor?
                        Thank you very much,
                        Jeff
