My 16ft boat came with a whopping 75hp Chrysler bolted to the back when I bought it, I have a slight hunch that’s a bit overpowered. I am putting twin RDE-16’s on the back to replace it and have a few questions

      1. Can these motors be adapted to hook up to a teleflex cable steering with brackets?

      2. If so how do you hook up the connections between the two motors so that they still tilt up?

I know originally these motors used a pulley and cable steering which I’d like to avoid, yes it works fine but I have the teleflex already in place.

I have attached a picture that I found of a boat for sale with twin motors but I don’t see how the cable is held in place. I appreciate all the help.

Look on the left side there is a bracket that is hooked to the cable.

Have you considered how loud those two old RD’s are going to be? To each his own I guess.

Anyhow, I’m posting this tie bar kit so you can see the concept. It is for rope and pulley systems so won’t work on your Teleflex push-pull. But notice the bend in the tie bar. That is the secret to allow the moors to tilt individually. Having said that, I gotta tell you that making it work correctly with push-pull will be a nightmare with a single engine, much less with duals. Yeah, you can make it work, but you won’t like it —at least most people won’t. The geometry and rod travel is all wrong.

This is how two RD-16’s will sound – amazing!

I found this video a couple years ago and also thought it was an awesome sound – those motors really hum!

The video doesn’t do it justice. It sounded like a WWII bomber and rattled every rivet in the boat, but what a ride. I had a smile for a week.

Wbeaton I’ve seen that video and you’re right those motors have quite the hum to them, and before I started this project I knew they were noisy and smelly motors but that’s why I love them. And I’m putting flotation foam and a small amount of sound deadening material to help with the echo and rattle in the boat, can’t wait to be screaming across the water this summer. I figure they’ll move a 16ft closed bow pretty quick and if not I’ve got an extra RD-14 that’s a good runner already😛
