Working on a 1966 Evinrude 6hp, model #6602. Asked to replace the water pump impeller, clean carb, and basically make it go properly again.
Dropped the lower and found it has a smaller impeller than what the books call for. Memory screams at me that somewhere sometime, they used a replacement housing and a smaller impeller. I am thinking the impeller is 18-3050 ????
But not able to find proof of what I need. pump housing part number is : 323596
Thoughts???
Also, the drive shaft is not coming out of the lower unit, thought it just pulled out?
Thanks for the help guys.

The diameter of the impeller is much smaller than the original impeller, but the replacement impeller is a bit taller than the original..Not familiar with the sierra part numbers, but pretty sure you will find the OEM part numbers of the newer pieces if you look up 1979 OMC 6hps.
Sometimes those 6hp driveshafts won’t pull out, the pinion key gets snags on the lower bushing….I wouldn’t force it….June 1, 2016 at 9:48 pm #37567You have to rotate the drive shaft, until the pin which puts pressure on the crank seal aligns with the slot, then you can drop the gearcase down. Put the gearcase in gear, rotate prop, while lightly pulling down. When the pin aligns with the slot, she will drop.

classicomctools@gmail.comJune 1, 2016 at 10:20 pm #37570Glad that pin came out OK, they can be a pain….Sometimes those driveshafts pull out, sometimes they don’t…And, you sure don’t want the pinion key to fall out of the shaft during removal and down inside the gearcase!
June 1, 2016 at 10:24 pm #37571Yeah I recalled once before having to take the upper pin out, this is one filthy unit, lots of crud and junk all over the place.. and totally calcium coated, or lime, whatever it is ugly..LOL

classicomctools@gmail.comJune 2, 2016 at 3:18 am #37596You don’t want to pull the driveshaft out of a ’66 model as it is one piece unit with a key on the end driving the pinion. If it did come out, you’d have to split the gearcase to get the pinion properly lined up on the end of the shaft. It just makes for extra work.
’79 was the year they came out with the splined pinion and small water pump. The new replacement 763758 kit can be used on motors right back to at least ’54. The P/N for the impeller itself is 0763735.
June 2, 2016 at 3:37 pm #37610Or 18-3090 if you must, but it actually cost more! A whole penny, but more. ME. Better to just stay with the OEM in this case.
