Hi folks, I’m starting to work on getting my grandfather’s old Johnson 5hp AT-39 going again. While looking around I saw 2 holes that reminded me of the weep exhaust holes in my 1968 Johnson 3hp, but they would be aimed directly at the transom while underway rather than out the back. Can anyone tell me what these are?

Those are exhaust relief holes. Just at a different orientation than your 68′ 3hp.

I have the next year’s version, an AT-10.
Mine has a tell-tale hole drilled in the
water line fitting, that pee’s out. Not sure
if my driveshaft tube has the holes facing forward
          like yours, but will check.
