At the Suwanee meet this past weekend my hub spun. Was able to limp back to the launch at about 1/4 throttle.
Now that I’m home and dry, what do I need to do? Can you repair them? If not, where’s the best place I can go to find a prop for a ’56 Evinrude Fastwin?
I do have a 12D10 and a pair of QD15s, can I use their props?April 17, 2016 at 11:40 pm #34965Have a prop shop fix it or you can pin it or find another.
April 18, 2016 at 3:55 am #34986I have several I had re-hubbed and they are much better and cheaper than buying new. Some shops also can fix bent and chipped blades as well. You also know that the rubber is new and not 50 year old NOS waiting to spin out on you.
April 18, 2016 at 5:05 am #34987Depending how bad the rubber hub is, you can sometimes press it out. Clean the prop internal area for left over rubber and clean the rubber hub with acetone as well as the prop several times. Then use super glue to reset the hub, by repressing the hub back in. Hold the pressure of the press against the hub until cruded.
I had a new old stock 18hp 1958 prop that spun, the rubber was about prefect and the super glue worked on the first try of a 16 mile lunch cruise to the resturant and back with no problems.
Otherwise you have to to pin the hub. Use at least use a 1/4 inch diameter (28 pitch would be preferred) bolt through the front end of the prop to get into the brass hub near the shear pin area, between the blades.April 18, 2016 at 8:56 pm #35015HENRY SMITH Co in Algonac,Mi can re hub. That is SOP for a propeller shop .They have been in Business for over 100 years
April 18, 2016 at 10:06 pm #35024Back in the day when I did this stuff for a living, General Propeller (Bradenton, FL) had a guy that made weekly pick-up & delivery to all the marine shops on this coast. You might want to just drop it off at the closest shop and have them send it out to General (assuming they still have the service.)

April 19, 2016 at 11:48 am #35066Yes, and it is rough on the clutch dog. Make sure it is running dead slow before shifting. But you should be doing that anyway, right?
