1958 Johnsons are among my favorites style wise.

I got my introduction to working on old OMC outboards (I had no prior "wrenching" experience) from this series of articles:
        http://www.omc-boats.org/maxw.html
(written for people looking for cheap power for home-built boats, *NOT* for people interested in interesting outboards for their own sake).

"big twin" was the Evinrude’s model name for the basic version of the 25-40HP twins of the 50’s and 60’s, but is often used to mean both the plain and fancy versions of Evinrude, Johnson and Gale 25-40HP engines.

          Thank you Phil B.
Will give it a read. Am starting from scratch also.
Trying to track down a factory service manual if you have any sources.
          Regards
          Jim

The most complete factory manual is this one:
            http://boatinfo.no/lib/johnson/manuals/ … on.html#/0
(tho this copy is ungainly to use)

There were also small manuals for each model/year.
But your library may have seloc or clymer manuals that cover the basics.

The parts catalog is great to have, but this will do:
            http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johns … del=RDS-20
Something i didn’t learn until recently is the the parts on each diagram are numbered in recommended order for disassembly!

              Thanks again Phil B..
Have you had any luck finding a place to source a wiring harness. The plugs on mine are just okay and the wiring itself is way past it.

If you don’t want to rewire it yourself …

Thank you for the post Garry. Will see if I can find a local electrical supply that can help me put together what I will need.
Great info and links on the nymarine site.

                      Jim,
The red Johnson book is the one I have. It leaves out some early 4 cylinder motors but that will not hurt your use for your 58. It covers that very well!
