I’m looking for condensers for my 1968 Montgomery Wards Sea King 20 HP. I got it running at home in the barrel after it sunk for a day after some heavy rains but when I tried to start it the next day it had no spark. I believe the condensers test bad but not entirely sure about that. I’d like to find either the correct condensers or a cross reference to some other brand. The originals are WICO X16781. I’ve seen condensers on the internet that mount the same but can’t tell if they would even fit or work with these coils. Not sure where to go from here.

        First,
A guy needs to find out the capacitance of the originals, then match them. I found some that would function but lately one guy came up with better caps to use. Most problems come from not high enough voltage ratings. Mine were Vishay brand & ran around 850 voltage rating. The others this new research were much higher voltage rating if anyone knows about the much higher voltage rating. Also dig thru old car manuals as these caps will work as well too.

Those look like mark 20/25 caps. You know electrical value? What motor again? Jeff.50@cox.net email me I might have books 4 it.

the excellent article by W.Mohat on cap sizing pretty much concluded that anything around .22uf will work and a bit bigger up to .47uf is ok if enough spark is generated to run the engine

my understanding is that bigger caps will increase the points protection while…. lowering the spark voltage.

smaller caps will increase spark voltage at the expenses of points damage

                      so .22uf is probably a fine mid-point

Thanks for the uf values. That is very helpful. So an update is in order. This all started with a submerged motor as I said in my original post. I cleaned everything a second time and actually got spark on one cylinder. So I swapped the condensers and cleaned connections once again and now I have spark on both cylinders. Is it possible the condensers were wet inside and have since dried out ? I’m baffled. I will try to run the motor today in the tank.
