I am about to get into the lower unit for my Wizard WA-25. My question what is the correct gear lube to use in this motor? It has a full gear shift F-N-R. In addition, how much trouble am I getting in when replacing all the seals in the lower unit? I am basically an OMC guy and this is my first attempt in working on a Wizard which is basically a Mercury Mark 30 clone.

Use john Deere corn head grease, available at any JD implement dealer in std. size grease gun tubes at $3-$4 each.

I would not use the cornhead grease in a Merc lower unit. Use the Lubriplate 105 that is recommended.

Cornhead grease is recommended (by myself and many others) for rowboat motors and other antiques that don’t have any seals in the lower units where most people were using the Lubriplate. The 105 possesses properties that make it desirable for Merc shifting lower units, as the grease is thinner and can flow to the bearings as necessary. Hope this helps.

Old Mercury lower units essentially DON’T have any seals in them because the rusty shafts have eaten them all up. I do a complete reseal of all of mine, including a Speedi-Sleeve on the drive shaft, then pressure test to 10 psi. THEN and ONLY then, I use 90 weight oil. But Cornhead is as good an alternative as can be hoped for, given the circumstance.

              Long live American manufacturing!

Thanks for the information. I have been using corn head crease in all of my antique motors. So I will give it a try.
