I’m thinking about a 2nd motor already. Two biggest reasons:

1.) If it’s the right year, could be a great parts motor for me or even use my motor as the parts box to put together one really great motor.

2.) If my motor runs and I decide to just make it a patina runner, I can work toward a restoration on this one. Looks to be in great physical (appearance) shape.  You can see the pic of my gas tank, don’t think my motor will ever compete in the beauty pageants.

Can anyone help with the year? The identification plate photo is attached, I don’t see anything where the model number should be but there is a serial number of 105016.

      5hp? 1.5? 3?

      Any help would be appreciated.

      Best Regards,

Can’t say for sure, but that is identical to my ’48 5hp.

Interesting that there is no model number on the tag. 5hp ?

How does the serial number compare with the one you have now?

Gale made lots of those motors for Monkey Wards.  There are lots of gas tanks out there, some even not too badly bashed in.  (Example not mine)

              Thank guys.

Ralph, I noticed my motor (’49) has two horizontal slots in the front side of the lower housing right under the transom mount. The subject motor has one. Yours the same?

Tubs, could that also be a 1.5hp? I ask because my motor uses a decimal point (5.0) in the hp description. Yes, it could have changed year to year, but trying to make some comparisons here.

Frank, my serial is 324531. Looking at the chart on discount marine I am assuming that the column ‘serial’ is the starting serial number for that model run. I’m sure you have it but in case here it is: https://discount-marine-parts.com/ob_sea_king_gale_model.html

Because of the missing information, along with the many models made each year, it’s really hard to tell what year it is. But very likely a ’47 or ’48. Definitely not a ’49 in my mind.

I appreciate any additional input you might have and Frank, I will get to looking harder for a gas tank. How did you search it? I’ve used the part # to no avail. That tank will probably ‘work’ for my motor, with some fuel line adjustments, but is not correct for my motor. Gonna keep searching and hope for the best.

              Thx guys!

Dang! I had 15 minutes into a reply and it just went away. Bear with me, I have a few questions/comments but my phone finger is numb. Gonna move to the garage computer in a few hours. Thx!

                    Frank,

Amazing how many gas tanks you can find if you just search Sea King Gas Tank. I was searching by part#.

Does anyone have access to a parts guide for ’51 and above? Mine only goes to ’50.

                    Thanks All!
